A quick guide to understanding LED lamp technology

Choosing the correct LED to replace your halogen lights can be difficult. When choosing the correct LED you need to first understand that there are so many types of LED chips on the market which are made by different manufactures such as Cree , luxeon or SMD to name a few. These LED chips vary in quality. These are placed into the LED lamps and depending on if the LED light bulb is 240v or 12v will depend on the driver that will be used with it. The next thing to consider is how hard the led is driven by the driver, as this will affect the lifespan of the LED lamps. For example driving an LED at 1000mA will make the LED brighter but will shorten the lifespan of the LED and fail far quicker than an LED being driven by 350mA. The next and final stage is thermal management. This is how the lamp conducts heat away from the LED chip. This is the housing of the lamp and the majority at the moment are made of aluminium. If this does not dissipate the heat effectively and is not operated at the correct temperature then this will also cause the LED to fail earlier than expected.

When choosing a quality LED lamp you will need to take these factors into consideration. The technical team at LED lighting bulbs UK can advise our customers on the best LED to use for the home.
