When choosing your LED Bulb

When choosing to replace a Mains 240v halogen light bulb with a 240 volts LED lamp the transition is straight forward. All you need to do is match the existing base lamp with the LED base lamp, for example a GU10 Halogen lamp can be replaced with a GU10 LED lamp as long as the lamps are the same size. This is the same for a screw fitting which is ES, E27 or SES. The main factors to consider when replacing halogen to LED lamp is to understand mains voltage and Low voltage. Mains Voltage is 220-240 volts and is more powerful than low voltage which is 12 volts. People think that being on low voltage is more cost effective on the electricity bills when in fact it is more expensive as you need a low voltage driver that can increase the wattage by up to 10% so for example your 50 watt lamp is now consumes 55 watts which is more money on the electricity bills.

When swapping a 12volts halogen which has 2 pins with a 12volts LED lamp the main thing to consider is the transformer. Some LED 12volts lamps will work with lighting transformers but the lighting transformer may over drive the LED which will cause the LED to fail very quickly. Sometime the LED lamp will not work with a lighting transformer at all. The best way to guarantee the lamp life is to change the transformers over with a separate LED driver. This will then give you a product guarantee with peace of mind to have a good return on your investment.
